Chery recalls almost 9,000 Omoda 5 (also known as C5 and O5) crossovers in Malaysia over a detached rear axle issue. It is the second time this model has become a victim of this problem, following a previous recall of 600 vehicles. The local regulator suspended the new registrations of the model.
On October 8, CarNewsChina reported that an Omoda 5 crossover from Chery suffered a complete rear axle detachment while driving. This incident happened in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Ironically, a similar incident happened in 2024, forcing Chery to arrange a recall campaign. At the publishing time, Chery Malaysia remained silent. However, the recall campaign was announced on October 11.

Chery officials shared that the incident involved a 2023 model year Omoda 5, causing no injuries. According to the Wuhu-based automaker, it immediately launched an investigation with Malaysia’s Road Transport Department. It revealed that some welding points on the rear axle trailing arms lack sufficient strength. This creates a risk of rupture “under extreme conditions.” Chery also shared that models with this design had been discontinued.
The automaker launched a recall company for 8,878 units of the Omoda 5 SUV to inspect the components and replace them free of charge where it is necessary. Chery also stated that it launched the same checks for vehicles manufactured in 2023 in other foreign markets. Meanwhile, Malaysia’s Road Transport Department suspended the Omoda 5’s Vehicle Type Approval. This means the new registrations of this model are restricted until the technical investigation is completed.
The recall covers “the C and H variants” of the Omoda 5. However, Chery didn’t specify the production years. The variant of this car that was filed for a recall was discontinued in Malaysia back in 2025. As mentioned, the same model previously caused a similar recall campaign in 2024. It covered 600 vehicles.
The Omoda 5 was priced at 108,400 – 118,400 ringgit (26,555 – 29,005 USD) in Malaysia. This compact SUV with dimensions of 4400/1830/1588 mm offered a 1.5-liter engine for 154 hp and a 230 Nm. The ICE powers the front wheels via a CVT. Interestingly, Chery Malaysia offered a 10-year or 1 million km warranty.
